  • Fine Jewelry & Watch auction on March 19, 2020 at 1PM EDT.
  • Featured Lots Shown: Mauboussin Art Deco Diamond and Rock Crystal Brooch.

NEW YORK, NY—The Fine Jewels auction took place Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 1PM EDT, offering a curated selection of important estate jewelry and rare signed pieces. Amid the escalation of the coronavirus (COVID-19), Fortuna was quick to adjust pre-auction operations to protect the health of our clients and staff, and ensure that our service to you remains uninterrupted. The March auction saw the introduction of “Virtual Previews,” in which clients can get a closer look at lots of interest by video chatting with our specialists directly; and the online auction catalog was greatly improved with the addition of video shots for all the lots offered. Because of the positive response received for these added services and the volume of online bidder activity that resulted in this sale, Fortuna is excited and thrilled to continue these additional services for our upcoming auctions.

In these uncertain times, we want to share as much fun and excitement as possible, so we’ve put together some of our March auction favorites! One of the many lots leading the sale was a very special Art Deco Diamond and Rock Crystal Brooch, by Mauboussin—the famed French jeweler recognized by many as one of the greatest jewelers during the Art Deco period. The striking combination of materials and geometric design makes this piece iconic Art Deco design. The brooch comes with a letter from Maubossin as well as a copy of the original archived drawing from the jewerly collection, an extremely valuable point of interest to any collector. This beautiful piece art history achieved $18,750 at auction, surpassing its high estimate and more than doubling the starting bid.

Next up, a pair of Diamond Pendant Earrings sparked lots of pre-bidding activity and the live auction was no different; the stunning accessories were offered at $6,000 and ended up achieving more than their high estimate, with $17,500.

The Orianne Emerald and Diamond Necklace is crafted in 14K white gold and set with pear- and oval-shaped emeralds, weighing a total of approximately 34.80 carats; round brilliant-cut diamonds, weighing a total of approximately 10.25 carats, most with H-I color and I1-I2 clarity. The pear and oval shaped emeralds are an extremely deep green and incredibly eyecatching. This vibrant piece was offered for an original $8,000, finally achieving $12,500 on auction day.

Another incredibly unique highlight from our sale was the Diamond Opal and Sapphire Necklace. The contrast of the Fancy Vivid Yellow-Orange Diamonds against the white diamonds with VS clarity, juxtaposed with the 2.60-Carat Lozenge Shaped Sapphie and colorful Trapezoid Cabochon-Cut Black Opal is a wonder for the eye to behold. It’s no surprise that this remarkable piece of artistry, which was offered originally for $16,000, ended up achieving $27,500.

Collectors were particularly excited to discover the Cartier Egyptian Revival Horus Falcon Diamond Cuff.  This vintage cartier piece is emblematic of Egyptian Revival. The cuff depicts Horus, the god of the sky, who was most often depicted as a falcon. This piece, which was crafted in the 1970’s and is crafted in the finest quality, as only Cartier can. COVID-19 was no match for Cartier or Horus; the cuff was offered for an original $18,000 and achieved $31,250. The cuff is made in 18K gold and is beautifully set with round brilliant-cut diamonds, weighing a total of approximately 4.30 carats, most with F-G color and VS clarity.

Another spectacular highlight from the sale was a 4.95-Carat Pear-Shaped Diamond Ring. The first thing one would say when looking at this stunning rock is “Wow”, promptly followed by a “Yes, I’ll marry you”. The beautiful sparkler boasts D color and VVS1 clarity and is flanked by two tapered baguette-cut diamonds. This incredible ring was offered for $70,000 and achieved $103,125.
