Frequently Asked Questions

Can FORTUNA®’s appraisal be used for insurance purposes?

What FORTUNA® offers are auction estimates or secondary market values of your jewelry or watches. Appraisals acquired for insurance purposes reflect retail replacement values and are usually not accurate representations of what your item is worth if you were to resell it.

Do I have to consign my item with FORTUNA® if you do a valuation?

No, our valuations are free and you are not obliged to consign with us thereafter. We believe in arming our clients with the knowledge of their jewelry or watch collection's true value so they know when they are being offered a fair price.

Can I visit your office?

Of course! We are located on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. Our office hours are Monday through Friday, from 10am-6pm. We only ask that you call us in advance to schedule an appointment. Our number is 212-389-9040.

Will my watch be insured?

Your watch is fully insured from the moment it is picked up by FedEx. When the watch is in our office, it is stored in our high security vaults in our secured office.

What is the difference between a reference and serial number? And how can I find it on my watch?

In the watch world, a reference number generally describes the metals and caliber of movement in a particular watch's configuration, while a serial number is the watch's unique identification number. For example, on a Rolex, you can always find the reference number engraved on the watch's case located between the lugs on the 12 o'clock side; and the serial number, on the 6 o'clock side of the watch.

Should I service my watch before selling it?

Generally, it's a smart idea to make sure your watch is in good working condition to maximize its appeal when offering it for sale. However, there is a large subcategory of vintage watches that will actually lose its value if its dial has been cleaned or its case has been polished. We always advise our clients to consult us first if they plan on selling their watch.
