Our leading lot, a giant in the vintage watch collecting world, the Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona Reference 6239. The reference 6239 is the same reference that the famed actor, race car driver and philanthropist, Paul Newman wore and popularized. The particular example we have features a black dial with white sub-registers, fitted with a Rolex jubilee bracelet. It was purchased second-hand in the 1980s for $800 by the current owner, yet its condition is nearly perfect given its history. The iconic timepiece achieved $137,500 at auction, congratulations to the lucky bidder and new owner!
In other iconic Rolex watches, the Important Watches auction offered a fine Rolex Day-Date Ref. 18038 in 18K yellow gold, which achieved $12,500 with a starting bid $9,500. This classic dress watch has an especially stately presence with its elegant wood dial—a great find for collectors looking for an iconic watch that is still out of the ordinary. Also featured in the sale was a Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 116618 in 18K yellow gold, which after a starting bid of $16,000, achieved $21,250.
